A picnic with nothing but food surpluses? On a location that is about to undergo a true metamorphose. The banks of the river Leie, at the Verzetskaai, will be lowered shortly after. Sounds a bit strange, but this initiative fits in the battle against poverty & food waste. Inspired by ‘Feeding the 5000’ (http://feedbackglobal.org). The province of West-Vlaanderen, in cooperation with the city & OCMW of Kortrijk, organises a street banquet to focus on the aim for a sustainable food system. With this initiative Kortrijk joins metropoles such as London, Paris, Sydney, Amsterdam, who’ve organised similar events.

Under the expert supervision of star chef Matthieu Beudaert (Table d’Amis), we’re going to prepare 2.000 vegetarian meals with nothing but food surpluses. Everybody’s welcome to enjoy a free meal between 12 am & 2 pm. Students of the RHIZO hotel school will prepare the meals.

From 4 pm on we will serve a dessert, again prepared with nothing but food surpluses. These will be prepared by students of the KTA Kortrijk, under the all-seeing eye of Guy Van Cauteren, another Belgian star chef.

We will provide the necessary tableware, in cooperation with the thrift shop Zuid-West-Vlaanderen, but feel free to bring your own! If you don’t need your tableware afterwards, you can donate them to the thrift shop. This way, your tableware gets a second life.

Between 12 am & 5 pm you can get inspired on the ‘food waste market’. You will find various organisations, active in our food chain, who will present their solutions to reduce food waste. From producer to consumer.
You will learn how you can process leftovers at home into a new meal, you can taste beer that is made from bread surpluses. Finally you can get in touch with initiatives that relocate food surpluses to the needy in our society.

Under the title ‘Bike ride Harvest fest’ the network for city gardening will organise a bike ride alongside a couple of harvest gardens in the heart of the city. Participants will enjoy a refreshing & healthy juice.

This event takes place during a car free Sunday in Kortrijk.
Check the website www.kortrijk.be/veroverdestraat for more information.

Kortrijk will only be accessible for pedestrians, cyclists & for people who use public transportation.
